Search Engine Optimization (SEO), is a common phrase when working with websites. However, what is it and what do you need to do to optimize your site?

What is SEO

Not all that long ago, most homes and businesses were listed in a phone book. Looking through the local businesses, you could find the appropriate category and contact a provider. SEO is what defines your business to what you do best, but at a global scale.

People of all ages and demographics now use search engines to find almost anything. Children can learn about school subjects, or see the latest toys, while adults search for products to buy, services, and much more. Whatever specialty your company or organization fulfills, it needs to be ready when customers are looking. That means optimizing your site for SEO.

Optimizing for SEO

When your site is built, or redesigned, this is the best time to have SEO in mind. Ask yourself, what is the focus of my website and what should it do for my organization? From that, build upon key areas and specific words or phrases you want to target. Your site, and each page, then needs to highlight these points.

Keywords need to be worked into the text, or copy, in a way that they are natural, but still stand out. Your site’s design also needs to be made so that it gives a hierarchy of information. Let’s say you have a page talking about SEO for an example. You would want the page’s title to clearly state this, then have subpoints that explain more.
