Once you have established your website’s domain and where it will be hosted, it is now time to build it. This step of the process takes the most amount of time, but it needs to be done well to best reflect your needs. The primary two questions you need to answer are: What do I want and What should it look like?

Determining Website Content

This can vary widely and depends on the purpose of your site. Do you just want to advertise your  organization and give information? Are you selling products, either online or in person? Do you need people to fill out forms to sign up for an event? Some websites include just one of these items, but they are frequently combined into a single site.

With your initial meeting with VMT, you will cover the intended goals of your site. They may change with time, but having a starting direction is helpful. Part of the process also includes what pages will be needed and an initial idea of how each page will fit in a hierarchy. After this has been decided, the site owner will need to gather material to place on the new site.

Text is a big part of any site and should clearly explain what each page is meant to inform. The home page is often a brief introduction to the site’s purpose with further detail given on other pages, such as an about section. Once you have determined what to include, then it’s time to decide on design.
